WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, “would you tell me, please, which way ought I go from here?” That depends a good deal on where you want to go, said the Cat. I don’t much care where, said Alice. Then it doesn’t matter which way you go, said the Cat.
Explain how you see this exchange relating to both this class and a persons life.  Where do you think we should go from here?

This relates to a person's life in the way that we get to decide where we want to go in life, what we want to get out of it, and how we use it. In the same way we control what we get out of the class and where it can go. The responsiblity of how we use the class rest solely on our shoulders. I think from here on out we should see everything as an opportunity to grow individually and with eachother. We also shouldn't take things as lightly. Not that it can't be fun but just more of a controlled, but still a focused fun. Sort of like a sports team or a club, its really fun, but you have to maitain focus otherwise the fun gets stripped away.

This relates to everything, life, this class, any options you come across. There are many paths you can take, good, or bad. It is all up to you on which you want to take. It all depends "on where you want to go." If everyone in the class is in the same mind set, everyone will want to go to same [general] direction. Therefore, we woukld all be taking the same path and we would all end up together on the same page. Same thing with life. You may all start together. But it all depends on where you want to go.

This situation relates to class in that we kinda gave the "I don't really care" vibe at the very beginning. The more we don't care about where we go and what were doing, the less we know of where to go, and what to do now. In life, we need to know what we want to do, how we want to live our lives, we cant just be couch potatoes for the rest of our days. No one is going to be there to point us in the direction, we have to realize it ourselves.

This scenario goes hand in hand with the direction of our class and with how we live our lives. If we don't have a goal or focus to achieve that goal, then it doesn't matter what we do because we don't care what the outcome is. Although if we want to get something out of life and/or this class, we have to find some value in the path we take and the goal we want to achieve. I want our goal to be to create a class where everyone feels equal and important. I also want us to be able to climb and persue the activities that are planned in the future.

With this exchange relating to our class, when people don't care about what they are doing, they dont care if they succeed or fail at a task. This class requires a positive attitude and commitment to a task. With an attitude of not caring, there is not much that we can accomplish together. In life, it is hard to get anywhere without caring about things. You need goals in life. Without goals, there is no purpose. I think, now that we know the expectations in this class, we need to start focusing and try to complete every task efficiently.

This relates to class because like you said, everyone takes away something different from class each day. We all will be spending 50 minutes of our lives every day together and learning about each other as well as taking on new tasks. (Discipline = finding value in everything that you do. So, when the Cat says "Then it doesn't matter which way you go", it can be interpreted as everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions and can take away something different than everyone else each day.) When Alice says, "I don’t much care where", it could mean that each path/person is equal, and that it doesn’t matter which ideas to do because we are ok with trying everything/new ideas. However, it also could have a negative connotation to it in that we are apathetic towards class and are not really caring/thinking about how to achieve our mutual, larger goal of working up to going to Devil’s Lake, becoming/learning how to work in a true team, trusting others, or caring about the well-being of the group as a whole. In life, we must seek out our own direction and what we personally think is right for us to do. Alice may not know where to go, but is just trying to seek out some guidance in her life because she knows she wants to get somewhere. Similarly, each person needs some guidance at one point or another, and I believe that it is in everyone’s nature to naturally want to succeed, no matter what their own definition of succeeding is. Plus, Alice’s opinion is just one part from the whole. There are other opinions too, though, that make up the whole. But the important thing to remember is that her opinion still makes up a part of the whole. Each person’s contribution in life and in the class is what makes each situation valuable (such as what we put into our sharing circle).

This relates to life and to our class in many ways. If you don't care about where you are going in your life then it doesn't matter what direction you go in. In class, if we don't care and we don't put in effort, then what are we getting out of being here for 50 minutes every day? That's why we all need to try our best and care. Then, we get to choose what type of experience we will have and what direction we will move on with our lives. In this class, we need to take the activities more seriously. We need to care more about the people around us too so when we go to Devil's Lake, we have full trust in each other. I think that will take a while, but we are all definitely capable of reaching that as our goal.

Essentially, this means that we are in control of what we do, and we assume 100% responsibility for our actions, because only we are in charge of our decisions. No one can make a decision for us, however, the decisions we make and actions we display have consequences, good or bad.
The actions that our class as a whole displayed on Thursday had the consequence of Mr. Davis doubting our intentions, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
This class isn't just a class, we became a team on that first day, and it is our responsibility to do what is best for the team, and we have to understand that this class isn't based on individual success, it's based on the success of us all, as one unit. We are a team now.
There is a saying: "You're only as strong as your weakest link", so we are responsible for making sure that our "weakest link" succeeds. If we do that, then this class will mean something to every one of us. Isn't that our goal?
Moving forward, we need to prove ourselves as a team. In my opinion, we should have a fresh start and get a second chance to prove ourselves, because we can succeed if we choose to.

This scenario can be applied to our lives in showing us that we have to have discipline and find value in everything. It's not necessarily a bad thing that Alice doesn't care where she is going because she knows that she can find value in every situation. No matter where she ends up, she knows that something good will be there waiting for her. I think that for our class, we have to use this to remind us that everything we will do will have some value in it, even if it is getting our entire class over a rope. From here, we all have to be more mindful of our teammates and remember that we can only make it to Devil's Lake and only truly become a team if we remember that this class is based off of our success as a group, not as individuals.

In this class since it is still the beginning, I don't think anyone really knew where this class was headed. It applies because as a class if no one really cares then why does it matter what we do? We need to motivation and drive to do well and get something positive out of outdoor adventure. As a person it should matter where you are going as well because the more you focus and care about what you're doing, the better outcome you will have.

Julija Grinevska said...

This relates to our lifes, decision making, and also our class. How we are responsible for what we need to do, and where we are going with it. Decision making should be very careful. But i agree with Anna, how we need just more motivation, and we will get the best out of the class. We all just need some more time to get used to each other and trust each other, and maybe from there the team work will appear.

This relates to life because we have many decisions in life we make, that depend on where we want go, how we will get to that point, and what we want go get out of life. This also relates to class because what we put into the class is what we get out of it and very little decisions can lead up to something, so we shouldn't take those little things lightly. And we should learn that all things happen for a reason, and your little actions and decisions lead up to them. And from here, I think that we should just really try to make this a very comfortable environment for everyone, so everyone can recieve support from each other, and be able to trust one another.

This relates to us because as a class we need to look into the future to what goals we want to achieve. Our goal is to climb at devils lake as a team. This goal may seem like a long way away but we must start preparing now, therefore we need to keep our direction in class to truly achieve this goal. It means without goals going where you want means nothing, you need a destination to reach one. While this is important to having a successful life, it is not vital. Sometimes goals can cloud your mind from what truly is important about reaching a destination, which is the journey. You become so wrapped up in succeeding failure is not an option, when actually failure, which is subjective anyways, opens many doors for a person. This is not suggesting I want to fail, but it should be kept open as an option because the willingness to fail will take the stress that might have caused you to fail anyways. Kenny Warner, a famous pianist once said, "there are no wrong notes, they are only as wrong as you percieve them to be."

I think tha it relates to us because it shows how we need to work together as a group to achieve our team goals. Our goal is to build trust with one another, enough to climb devils lake. We will go as a team and climb up as a team and leave as a team. It also shows that you have the power to do whatever you want with your life, you lead it. From here I think we should continue to build up trust as a team and continue to share and open up with one another.

Alice doesn't have a clear vision of where she wants to end up. She doesn't have specific goals. And when someone has no direction in life, their actions literally have no meaning or effect. That is why it is important in this class, and in life in general, to set goals and to have a clear end point in sight. That way, we can work towards what we are personally looking to take from each experience. I think it will be important for us, as a class, to decide what we want out of each activity we do. We need to get to a place where every day we know what our goals are and what we expect from ourselves, and from each other.

Sanjana Bendi said...

This relates to us as a class and an individual because whatever effort we put in, will in the end be beneficial to us and help us achieve our goal which is to go to Devil's Lake. We need to set our own goals and also accomplish the class's goal. We all will have different experiences on the way, but all that matters is that we learn from those experiences and in the end accomplish our overall goal. In the process, we will learn to trust each other and to help each other accomplish the end goal.

I think this relates to the class and life because what you put into something is what you will get out of it. If together we all contribute and help each other out then our outcome will be enormous but if everyone has an “I don’t really care attitude” then we will not all accomplish our goal. In the end, I think we will all pull together as a class.

This quote really relates to the idea that you will get out of life, and individual situations in life, what you want as long as you are able to identify this. Once you are able to realize what you want from life in general (or in this case, this class) you can determine how to figure out how to achieve that goal. Once we can bond together and begin working as a class we will be able to get so much more out of this whole experience. It is always important to know where you are going, especially in a class setting. We know that our goal is to get to Devil's Lake, climb, and all leave safely- this can be accomplished becuase we do know our ultimate goal. If people do not know where they are going, and don't care where they end up that is most often when faliure is likely to occur. We as a group must figure out what direction this particular group of people will take this class and how we will accomplish our goal of making it to Devil's Lake. We have to care to get it done.

It relates to our decisions with out lives and what paths we choose to take to lead us to our goals. By not caring you do not open any paths for yourself. Even if you have a goal, not caring much about it or how you get to it leads to a poor results. Similarly, in gym class, we are working towards going to Devil's lake, and if we do not care about the team building and skills, we potentially open ourselves to poor results. things could happen that could get people injured or killed. we need to be determined and care very much about each activity done in class to insure that we get the best results possible when we go.

Krystyna Lopez said...

It relates to life in general, because in order to choose a path for anything you must have a goal or destination in mind first. After that, depending on where you want to go in life, you are the one that has to choose a path, or at least you know where you want the path to take you. As well, it shows that if you're apathetic about where you want to go, the path will be affected by that apathy and will be much more of a struggle. As a class, we know that we are working towards a common goal- to take the trip to Devil's Lake, have fun, work hard, and return safely. Because we all have this goal in mind, we can work to go down the path to improve our group dynamics so we can be prepared to take the trip, rather than having the entire class be unprepared and at much higher risk to injury due to an overall lackadaisical attitude during preparation. By knowing where we want to go, we can choose which path to take and commit to it in order to accomplish our goal (with the help of the Cheshire Cat, whom i see as Mr. Davis in this situation).

I think it has to do with this class by, saying that if you want to have fun and be part of the class then you have to put forth effort to the class. If you have to be in the class, just make it a good time! People cant choose the path they want you to go down you have to choose it and feel good about it.

lali rodriguez said...

this can be related the choices we come to make in life because everytime you choose a path or make a decision it effects you in some way and the outcome of it, sometimes it can be good and sometimes not always the way you want it to go. thats why we have to put forth effort in everything we do so it can lead us in the right direction and help us make better choices over all this relates back to our class because its the same thing if we put forth effort into this class we will get so much out of it. we learn so many things that can benefit us in many ways, things that we can carry on with us and use it in our everyday lives, like all the team building activities it teaches us how to work with other people as a group something that will always come up in our lives no matter what age we are and trusting the peope around you is also something we get out of this learning how to build trust with others. over all i think the way we act now and the choices we make along the way will impact the future and whatever we get out of what we do in life.

I think we can connect this to our everyday life. We can all choose what direction we want to go. Later on, we all choose what job we want, what life style to live, how we want our lives to be lived. This connects to our gym class as well. We all chose to be here and we can all choose to make it work. I chose to be here because I thought it would be a new experience. Even though it seems like I dont do much, I honestly try and have fun. I think most of us know what direction we are heading to but if you think about it, its okay not to know sometimes.

The Cheshire cat has it right. If a person does not care about where thay want to end up, then it really does not matter which path they take. This apathy is not necessarily a bad thing, it just means that a person does not have control over their future any more. Outside forces will dictate what becomes of that person. If a person wants to end up at a specific place or wants to achieve a goal or a dream, then they have to work hard to take the best path that will allow them to get to where they want to be. The same can be said of our class. We have a choice of where we want to end up. If we want to be successful as a team, and in the future at Devil's Lake, then we must choose the path that will help us get there. It will involve a lot of hard work, frustration, communication, and success. If however, that is not where we want to end up, then we can just kind of let other people dictate what our class becomes. The choice is ours and ours alone, so we should think carefully about which path we want to take.

Jackie Zara said...

Because Alice does not care where she ends up, she has the decision of where to go from here. I think this applies directly to our class and our lives as well. If our class chooses to stay on task and take our activities seriously, we will be on our way towards success at Devil's Lake. However, this decision rests upon our own shoulders. We will only receive whatever effort we put into the class. This applies to our life, because we are the ones who are in control of our own destiny. Other people can guide you along the way (like the Cat), but ultimately you must make your own decisions and be motivated.

Shannon Lemajeur said...

This relates to our lives and our class in terms of attitude and determination. Our class has the ability to choose which path we take; just like we choose our own individual paths in life. It will require hard work, cooperation, team work, and much more. Success will only happen if we demonstrate positive attitudes and work together to complete tasks. This class will have positive results in the end if we put forth the effort needed. The choice is ours.

This relates to the direction you want to take in life and the choices you'll have to make to get there. I think that in this class the quote relates to what we choose to get out of it. If we choose to brush it off then we're not going to get much out of it, but if we try our best in every activity, we'll get so much more out of it.

Kara Peterson said...

This quote relates to everyone's life & the path they choose to take. If you don't know where you're going, or you don't care about where you're going, then you have no destination, no goals. If you choose to take a path that leads you to challenges, then you will grow as a person. If you choose the path that's easiest, the one that's already been created for you, then you won't make the best choices, and you won't learn much about yourself. As a class, i think from now on we should take the more difficult path to follow, because without any kind of situation that makes you think, our gym class won't have any way to build character & grow as a team together.

Christina Nowicki said...

Alice could choose either path. She doesn't know where either will lead, although if she becomes apathetic her choice won't matter at all and she'll have to deal with the consequences. Same thing with our class. There's a lot of way you could deal with the games we play, but if you choose apathy then you're leaving your fate to chance. And normally, chance is a very good thing to play around with. No one should be leaving their future to chance, especially if you have the option to decide on your own. Apathy will get you no where, especially in adventure ed.

Dominique Marisie said...

This quote relates to a persons life because we don't exactly choose where we want to go, we may have an idea of what we want to accomplish, but we will take any path to get there and if one doesn't work we try another. There are different ways to deal with any situation and it depends on the person to choose how they will deal. Everyone has their own goals, big or small, and prioritize them however they please. Their peers are there to help guide them and help them accomplish their goals while supporting them the entire way.

Abbey Gould said...

This quote is relevant to a persons life because it relates to the path's people choose in order to accomplish their goal. this relates to our class in many ways because we need to choose to work together and choose to be cooperative with one another in order to accomplish the end result of the class field trip.
