OUR TEAM MOTTO!

Below you will find four quotes on teams and team building. Pick the one you think best describes what we are trying to or should be trying to accomplish, and explain what the quote means to you.

1. A group is a bunch of people in an elevator. A team is also a bunch of people in an elevator, but the elevator is broken!
2. The ratio of We's to I,s is the best indicator of the development of a team.
3. A group becomes a team when each member is sure enough of himself and his contribution to praise the skill of the others.
4. None of us is as smart as all of us.

My favorite quote is the first one. Not only does it encompass the fact that we have to work together to get out of difficult situations but it also relates to the idea that it might not always be easy. Just like being trapped in an elevator, for better or worse we must learn to accept the people around us. We are placed into this class together and the way we chose to respond to the probelms we are faced with determines if we succeed.

I dont know why, but i like this quote. It shows putting others first. Eeveryone has an ego but we have to learn how to control it. Its not about showing off to others. We become a team when we put others first. When people put their egos and selfishness aside, and start caring more about others and the rest of the team, then we become a team together.

4. None of us is as smart as all of us.
I like this quote because it's saying that one person does not accomplish a task, the team does. A group is smarter that one person because in a group, more ideas are floating around. In a group, teammates are there to bring you up when you are down, but if working alone, you have to count on yourself for motivation. If we all work together, we can accomplish a task quicker and more smoothly than one person can.

Mypersonal favorite is 2. "The ratio of We's to I,s is the best indicator of the development of a team." A team is something that combines a lot of individuals and unites them under one goal and one name. If you have more people saying "our goal" and "we succeeded", then there is a great liklihood that there was a shift from individual thinking to group mentality. In something like this clss, when we all are suppoesed to have each otehr's back, it is important for people to try and became one nit instead of individuals clumped together. If we can get more "we's" than "I's", then we are ready to take on the challenges this class presents.

I like the first quote best, about the people in an elevator. I think it perfectly exemplifies what a team is. Anyone can stand next to a group of people and say they're a team. But a team isn't a team unless they have a common goal, motivation, determination, and the mutual knowledge that no one is "better" or smarter or more useful than other team members. Every member of a team is on the same "level" and has something to contribute. And for that, everyone deserves a certain level of respect.

My favorite is the third: "A group becomes a team when each member is sure enough of himself and his contribution to praise the skill of the others." I think this is especially applicable to this class becuase it has to do with our ablility to asses our strenghts and weaknesses while recognizing those of others. I also think this quote says a lot about how we need to be comfortable with those around us to be able to work the best way we can. We need to strive to create a cohesive group where everyone is comfortable with EVERYONE else in the group.

I like the last one. It really just simply states what we are tring to do, work as a team and figure things out as a group. If everyone works with everyone else we become able to handle bigger problems because we have more brain power and ideas working together.

My favorite quote is: "None of us is as smart as all of us"
It is saying that in order to accomplish a goal, the more minds and ideas the faster we will be able to accomplish it. It tells us that it is better to work together and to try to incorporate everyone's ideas instead of having our little individual groups and not working together.

i really like the first quote best. it remind me of the difficult tasks that out door adventure trys to accomplish as a team.

I think quote one, "a group is a bunch of people in an elevator. A team is also a bunch of people in an elevator, but the elevator is broken!" best describes what we are trying to accomplish because the elevator is broken, and as a team we are trying to fix it to overcome that obstacle. That quote means that with a team, anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Teams accomplish tasks together, and that is what that quote means to me.

2. "The ratio of We's to I,s is the best indicator of the development of a team."
I think this quote best describes our class and our goal we are working towards. Adventure Ed is all about team work and there is no I in team. We are all working on getting to know each other and becoming a we instead of a bunch of Is. The more people who separate themselves and don't take on each task as the group, the weaker we will be as a whole. Everyone has to have the group mentality for us to accomplish everything we set out to.

Ian Eichelberg said...

I like the first one the best. I believe it describes a team as better than a group, by saying that when we are a team, the elevator is nice and functional, but when we are just a group, the elevator becomes broken and dysfunctional.

1. A group is a bunch of people in an elevator. A team is also a bunch of people in an elevator, but the elevator is broken!
This is my favorite quote. to me it states that we have to work together to accomplish our goals. It's not always easy. we have to put aside our differences to survive.

4. None of us is as smart as all of us. I think this quote describes us the best and what we are trying to accomplish. Us working as one team is better then us not working together at all. Together we become smarter.

I think quote #4 " None of us is as smart as all of us" best describes team work, and what we are trying to accomplish.
None of us alone, by themselves can actually work as all of us together. To make a decision or come to a conclusion every single of us should participate. All together we are better than one by one.

Liz Randall said...

Personally I like the 4th quote the best. This quote represents the fact that a team can accomplish a whole lot more working together than a group of individuals can. By working together as a team we mesh into one voice and work cohesively to get a task done quickly. If a group of individuals attempted the same task it would take them far longer because they'd be discombobulated.

I think quote #4 "None of us is as smart as all of us." describes what we are trying to do the best. There are some people that may be smarter than others, but really, each person is smart in their own way. If we use each person's intellect and put it all together, that is what being a team is really about. We need to put all of our minds together, always. It's not about You; it's about everyone else and the entire group. Once we are in the mindset that it is about everyone else too and not just ourselves, and once we combine all of our knowledge to devise our best plan of attack, then we are acting more as a team.

Christina Nowicki said...

I choose the last quote, none of us are as smart as all of us. I feel like it's very simply put, but at the same time effective. All of our minds work in different ways, and we need to learn to respect that. I might have a completely different way of thinking than someone else in the class, and that's okay. Because when you put all these varying ways of thought together, you get a wider perspective. This leads all of us to think in ways unlike how we used to. When we put all of this together, this quote encompassing what we are striving towards, teamwork.

Krystyna Lopez said...

I would choose the first quote, about the people stuck on the elevator. Everyone in our class has been a group for a while, but because we're faced with the challenges of the broken elevator together we are becoming a team, one that can work together as a unit rather than being considered "just a group of people". For me, I think it really distinguishes the important difference between a group and a team, and why some teams have the capability of being so great. By being faced with a challenge, a group has to work together and work as a team to benefit them all. By the end of the year, the group of people in are class will surely become a team, one that knows how to repel the others down the elevator shaft and to safety on the first floor :)

i like the fourth quote the best, because i think it just describes the whole point of the class and what we have been doing sinc day one. its also true working as a team is always better than workin alone.

Shannon Lemajeur said...

My favorite quote is the last pme "None of us is as smart as all of us". We are able to complete tasks better when we work as a team and put all of out ideas together. One person can not succeed alone, it must be a team effort. Different ideas contributed by others impact the group.

Kathryn Risher said...

the quote that stuck out to me the most was the last one simply because alot of times in class we go off and do our own things. not necessarily in the way that no one is doing anything, but in the way that everyone is trying everything all at once. i think the last quote could be an indication that sometimes we need to step back and collect ourselves and decide on one method to try rather than trying five at once. if we all focused on the same thing there would be a lot less complacency and a lot more ideas because we would be using all of our reasources. (resources meaning other people's ideas)

I think the best motto is "None of us is as smart as all of us." It shows that even though we all maybe smart in our own way, we are even smarter together. Its almost similar to the phrase "Two heads are better than one" I think that our class has a lot of ideas and if we put them together we'll create even better ideas.

I tend to gravitate to the last quote, "None of us is as smart as all of us". Individually, we all think in different ways, and most of the time, we only think of things through one perspective.
This applies to outdoor in that we generally have a task at hand that requires a thought process and problem solving.
Most of us will look at the situation from our perspective, and we might miss something. We would have "holes" in our individual problem solving. At which point, we would individually say that there is no solution, and would get stuck.
With everyone's thoughts being put together, it gives us the opportunity to fill those "holes" and be able to find a method or solution that will work.
That seems to affect how successful we are in certain tasks.
When we take into account everyone's thoughts, we tend to be more successful in that task.

Kara Peterson said...

I like the last quote the best as far as this outdoor adventure class goes. It makes a lot of sense with us because everyone tries to come up with all these ideas on their own. maybe if our class sat down and talked about an idea they have, then other people will think of a better one that goes along the lines of the idea that was just mentioned, rather than everyone acting on the first decent idea that they hear. this quote just makes you realize that as a team, we have to work off of everyone's ideas, not just our own, because there are lots of helpful ideas out there that we can't even begin to think of on our own.

Jeff Swanlund said...

I believe we fall into the first quote. we're all in the same place, and with the same problem. we work together in order to solve our problems, and or team building exercises. Although our opinions of how to get out of the elevator differ, we at least have many opinions and communication skills in order to find what works best.

Jackie Zara said...

I think the first quote pretty accurately describes what we're trying to accomplish in our class. We may call ourselves a team, but that doesn't necessarily make us one. We may still be a "group" because we are only able to work together in easier situations when there is not much at risk. Our goal of truly becoming a team will only be met when everyone works together in order to solve problems, despite the difficulty level of the given situation. (Like the elevator being broken.)

Lindsey Witting said...

My favorite quote was the fourth one. The reason why is because it means with a group you could accomplish more. The more minds working together means a better outcome.

Stephanie Gallo said...

I like the last quote the best: "None of us is as smart as all of us" because it explains the importance of working together as a team to achieve a goal. If one person tries to accomplish the task on their own, they will likely fail, which we saw today in the rope activity. Also, when one person thinks of an idea, by communicating it to the group and allowing everyone to think about it, we are increasing our chances of improving on the idea, and we are also making sure that everyone is involved and that they understand what is going on. It's important for the entire group to be part of the activity because, in the end, it's the entire group that has to accomplish the goal, not just one person or a small group of people. By working together, we will get results that are much better than if one person tried to do everything on their own.

Anna Johnson said...

My favorite quote is the fourth one. It means the most to me because it says no one can accomplish something by themselves the way you would if you worked with everyone. In a team you can't be about yourself. You have to learn to work with everyone else in your group and use their thoughts as well. One is not as powerful as an entire class.

4. I think this quote does alot for describing our class because poepel just think they can take charge when someone may have a safer or more planned out idea. i think it determines whether or not we succeed if everyone is participating or not and tahts why i like this quote.

Sally Park said...

My favorite would be the third quote because I think that it shows that when a member trusts in his group, other members will also build their trust in their team, and therefore would be more effective as a team. And, I think that it's trying to say that a group becomes a team in when each person is confident and comfortable in the group. I think we need to work more towards this because I feel that many in our class want to participate or say something but are afraid to because they feel like they'd be shut down, or the people who always, contribute are contributing so they don't want to change up the "system." And I feel that if we work more towards this, our class as a whole will feel that all of our knowledge is truly put together, and it's the best of our abilities.

Dominique Marisie said...

I think the first quote represents our class the most. It is pretty much saying all of us thrown together, for example in the beginning of the year, were kind of a useless clump of people. Once we starting getting to know each other and being more comfortable, we started working together more easily and actually became a core group of student together. We all help each other out and work as a TEAM to accomplish tasks thrown at us.

beccaculley said...

the 1st one stuck out to me the most because a group of people is really just a group of people. but when there is a problem, people have to work together and it becomes a team. They have to go from being strangers to trusting each other.
